Parent and Educator Connection
The Parent and Educator Connection (PEC) began in 1984 under the sponsorship of the Iowa Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education, with the support of Iowa's Area Education Agencies (AEAs). Each AEA has at least one parent and one educator working together, dedicated to promoting genuine partnerships among families, schools and communities.
Twenty years later, the PEC continues to provide services to families, schools and communities. While the focus has changed from the ability to access services to looking at results, the basic belief remains the same. When individuals and relationships are honored, the ultimate winner is the student.
Transition remains the emphasis of the PEC as it occurs many times in a child's and/or family's life. The concentration is on children as they move from home programs to school-based programs, which occurs around age 3, and also as young adults progress from school to post-school options. Services will also be delivered, when needed, in other areas as well.
The Parent-Educator Connection offers the following activities:
- PEC Resource Library - Parents resources available on AEA website under sub heading "parent"
- Information on conferences and workshops
- Support to families or educators through personal contact
- Parent record folders
- Financial support to families to attend workshops
- The Connection newsletter
- Link to Parent Information Tab
